Historical Background

The establishment of the university is in response to the national call for private participation in university education, as stated in the Education (National Minimum Standards and Establishment of Institutions) Act No. 9 of 1993.

The vision for establishing Amadeus University was conceptualised by Dr. Godwin Nwabunka, the founder of the Grooming Centre, in 2006. Dr. Nwabunka, an established development economist and entrepreneur, recognised the power of education as a tool for empowerment and saw the need to establish a university that would contribute to the development of the society. With his educational background, professional experience, and knowledge in development economics, Dr. Nwabunka embarked on the journey to establish Amadeus University.

The establishment of the university is in response to the national call for private participation in university education, as stated in the Education (National Minimum Standards and Establishment of Institutions) Act No. 9 of 1993. The goal is to complement the efforts of the state and federal governments in providing quality university education to Nigerians.

Amadeus University is located in Amizi Town, Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State. Abia State is situated in the southeastern region of Nigeria and shares boundaries with Ebonyi, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Imo, and Anambra States. It covers an area of approximately 5,243.7 square kilometres, accounting for about 5.8% of Nigeria’s total land area. The capital of Abia State is Umuahia, and the major commercial city is Aba.

The proposed Amadeus University benefits from its proximity to other universities in Abia State, such as Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Abia State University, Gregory University, Rhema University, and Clifford University. The presence of these institutions creates opportunities for social and academic linkages.

The population of Abia State consists predominantly of the Igbo people, with the Igbo language being widely spoken. The state is culturally rich, with unique styles of dressing, dancing, arts, and crafts. Various festivals are celebrated in different communities to honour deities and mark important events. Agriculture is the major occupation in Abia State, with cash crops such as palm produce, cocoa, and rubber, as well as food crops like yam, cassava, rice, and plantain being produced in large quantities. The state also has abundant manpower resources, providing skilled and unskilled labour for industrial development.

The vision of Amadeus University is to produce globally competitive, morally sound, and practically oriented graduates who will positively impact sustainable societal development. The mission is to create a conducive learning environment with functional and purposeful infrastructure to produce self-employable and productive graduates.

The philosophy of Amadeus University is to promote research-driven advancement of learning, provide equal opportunities for acquiring higher education, and produce self-reliant, nationally relevant, and globally competitive graduates. The university aims to achieve academic excellence in the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains of the human person.

The objectives of Amadeus University include the production of globally competitive graduates, offering opportunities for talent development, promoting ideas and innovations, fostering cultural and intercultural relations, establishing local and international linkages, providing quality knowledge impartation through qualified scholars, and developing an ICT-driven learning environment.
